I saw a tall ship sailing by ...

The recent visit Sue and I made down to the River Thames coincided with the start of an event entitled SAIL GREENWICH that was occurring on the river. From 15th to 18th September 2016 a number of tall ships are cruising from Woolwich Royal Arsenal Pier along the River Thames and back.

Click on the image of the map to enlarge it.
Whilst we were near the Woolwich Royal Arsenal Pier I was able to photograph most of the tall ships that are operating these cruises. The ships that are being used include:

Gallant

J R Tolkien

Jantje

Morgenster

Oosterschelde

Thalassa

Zephyr

  1. Very nice Tall Ships on the Thames Bob. We sometimes have a 'Tall Ships' fleet sail into our Sydney Harbour (Port Jackson) to mark special occasions. Our 'James Craig' and 'HMS Endeavour' take part. Alas the replica 'HMS Bounty' of Captain Bligh's is no longer with us - being lost near the Gulf of Mexico in a tremendous storm. I live approx. 33 miles SW of Sydney - and it is a bit of a trek to get into Sydney (best and easiest by Rail)...I however like to visit our Sydney Maritime Museum - it is very good with many vessels for an pier side display. Regards. KEV.

    1. Kev,

After many years of slow decline, the River Thames is gradually coming back to life as people begin to realise what a wonderful asset it is. These tall ships are operating as a commercial venture, and are running excursions from Woolwich and Greenwich up to the centre of London. (The cost is on average £60.00 per person for two hours on the river!)

We currently have the Thames Clipper water bus, which runs a regular service along the river, and this is a great way to get to and from the centre of London if you live close to one of the piers it uses. It is not a fast service, but it has plenty of seats, somewhere to stand outside on a fine day, and somewhere where you can buy refreshments ... and the views are fantastic!

We get the occasional visit from an historical ship (I think that one that visit a few years ago was HMS Endeavour) and increasing numbers of small cruise ships. There are plans to build a cruise terminal at Greenwich for medium-sized cruise ships ... but some of the locals are trying to stop it on the grounds of air pollution. (Nothing to do with being nimbys [Not In My Back Yard] or the perceived effect it might have on the property values of their homes!)

I wish that I lived closer to the river, but I doubt if I will ever be rich enough to be able to.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Dannoc,

There is no better way to spend a couple of hours than sitting by the River Thames watching the ships sail by.

      All the best,

      Bob
